The Institute for Precision Medicine hosts a monthly speaker series to highlight advances in Precision Medicine research and in Personalized Care – not only at Pitt/UPMC but across the United States.

The third IPM speaker for the Fall 2022 semester will be given by Jeanette McCarthy MPH, PhD, on November 16th at 4:00pm via Zoom. Dr McCarthy is the Founder of Precision Medicine Advisors, a group which focusses on improving genomic literacy and VP of Precision Medicine at Fabric Genomics. She is also Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of California San Francisco and Duke University where she is part of the Center for Personalized and Precision Medicine. Dr McCarthy is a UC Berkeley trained genetic epidemiologist and spent the early part of her career in industry at Millennium Pharmaceuticals before transitioning to academia. Her previous research focused on the genetic underpinnings of complex diseases. Over the past decade, she has become a leading educator in the field of genomic and precision medicine and an advisor to the genetic testing industry.

In her presentation entitled ‘A Practical Approach to Precision Medicine Education’, Dr McCarthy will share her experience over the past decade as a precision medicine leader and educator. She will present data on utilization of precision medicine and address some of the health care skepticism about genetic testing. Dr McCarthy will share a pragmatic genetics education approach for healthcare providers that aims to improve genomic literacy and instill practical skills for integrating genetic testing into patient care.
