The Institute for Precision Medicine hosts a monthly lecture series to highlight advances in Precision Medicine research and in Personalized Care – not only within Pitt and UPMC, but across the United States.

The third IPM lecture for the Fall 2021 semester will be delivered by Heidi Rehm, PhD, Chief Genomics Officer at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Clinical and Research Strategies to Support Genomic Medicine

Despite major advances in deciphering the genome, barriers to incorporating genomics into clinical care abound.  Overcoming these barriers requires extensive infrastructure, including standards, knowledgebases, and global data sharing, as well as innovative solutions and a rich interface between research and clinical care.  This talk will present both local and global efforts to support clinical genomics, from diagnosis to gene discovery.

Dr. Heidi Rehm leads the Center for Genomic Medicine, which focuses on integrating genomics into the practice of medicine.  She is a board-certified laboratory geneticist and serves as Medical Director of the Broad Institute Clinical Research Sequencing Platform, working to guide genomic testing for clinical and research use.  Dr. Rehm is also Co-Director of the Program in Medical and Population Genetics at the Broad Institute, and teaches as Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School.  She is a principal investigator of ClinGen, which provides free, publicly accessible resources to support the interpretation of genes and variants.  Dr. Rehm also co-leads the Broad Center for Mendelian Genomics, discovering novel rare disease genes, and co-leads the Matchmaker Exchange.

Dr. Rehm is a strong advocate open science and data sharing, working to extend these approaches through her role as vice chair of the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health.  Additionally, Dr. Rehm is principal investigator of the Broad-LMM-Color All of Us Genome Center, supporting the sequencing and return of results to a cohort of one million individuals in the US.  She also co-leads gnomAD, the Genome Aggregation Database.

Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, November 17th at 4:00pm.
